World Cup ’11

Well, Cricket in India is a religion. There’s nobody whose born in India and has not played or watched cricket atleast once in his life time! From kids to grandpa’s, cricket runs in their blood.

And now its time for World Cup ’11 which I need not explain how much valued it is in India.

India have been placed in Group B along with likes of SA, England, West Indies. Must say, 4 teams moving up for the Super 8 stage, I don’t see any problem for India to cruise through unless we repeat the 2007 world cup run! (which m sure ain’t gonna happen this time round).

Group A: Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Canada and Kenya

Group B: India, South Africa, England, West Indies, Bangladesh, Ireland and Netherlands.

Squad:

Dhoni , Tendulkar, Sehwag,  Gambhir, Yuvraj , Raina, Kohli, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan, Praveen Kumar, Zaheer, Nehra, Munaf, Piyush Chawla, R Ashwin.

It was really a shocker to see Sreesanth being omitted from the squad! But when thought deeply on this omission, I feel it was right on the selectors and captains part to omit the kerala pacer who is in form but when it comes to pressure handling situation and also bowling on Indian pitches Nehra is much better than Sree.
One more shocker in the lineup was the young leggie Piyush Chawla, who hasn’t played International cricket since 2008. He surely will be sitting on the sidelines through out the tournament, but the question remains WAS HE BETTER THAN OJHA?

For the first time in the history of India representing at the World Cup, this year there is not a single Karnataka player named in the squad. Vinay Kumar was the only hope Kannadigas had which was shattered when Munaf was chosen ahead of him. Robin Uttappa who is in top notch form and who was the second highest priced player at the recently concluded IPL auction was not even in the list of probables for the Worldcup.
It really amazes me when someone who has talent and who is in form is overlooked. Its INDIA you see, POLITICS AT ITS BEST!

On the brighter side, India has a very well balanced line up when it comes to batting , fielding or bowling . The likes of Raina, Kohli, Pathan and Yuvi have set a different standard when it comes to fielding and are just electric out on the field. With Zaheer leading the pace attack and also considering his recent form we are surely going to have a treat watching him bowl. When it comes to spin, bhajji does his best. Also not to forget our part time spinners who do very well plucking a wicket or two in the short 4-5 over spell they bowl. Fitness ahead of the world cup for Sehwag and Gambhir is a concern. But if they both get going then there is no stopping. Omission of a part time keeper in the squad might not have a great effect since our cool headed captain has always been fit.

Last but not the least, MASTER BLASTER THE LEGEND SACHIN TENDULKAR will be playing possibly his last world cup tournament. More than anyone else in the team, he deserves to win this great honor in cricketing field and I believe India has a great chance this time round to make it happen and give the master a victorious send off!

Lets hope for the best!

Cheers
Muki

  1. Am an India fan but don’t think India will lift the WC. India to lose in the semis. Fingers crossed though.
That said, if we get to the finals, we have a clear advantage being the home team for the finals.
Sri Lanka are favourites, followed closely by a rejuvenated England side and hey, don’t discount the Australians, they are not doing too bad in against England.
Don’t agree Utthappa should’ve been included, his form speaks for itself. And what about Yuvi? He has put up and appears lazy in the field.
21 years, 400+ ODIs…Sachin will carry India again!!

    1. My gut feeling says we ll win it! it was d same during the first T20 WC as well.. so lets hope for the best!
Regarding the team selection have mentioned “POLITICS AT ITS BEST” 🙂
